I reckon every blogger should be allowed to do this once in a while….
My thoughts this morning were about women’s underwear. Oh, your ability to surprise us is boundless! Actually, it was as a result of receiving an e-mail from Victoria’s Secret. Is that what you want when you open your e-mail to work - a picture of some stunning brunette wearing a red see-through basque? Well, er, of course not! There’s also that unspoken (hey this is how advertising works in my head) implication that for just $54.99, your girlfriend could look like that too. Obviously, it goes without saying, she’d look much better (get that sentence in quickly, man).
So there I was thinking about women’s underwear, when I realised that what I wanted to say was actually in Nick Hornby’s High Fidelity. And, because I don’t want to be accused of writing something based on what he’s written, I’m just going to copy it out. If you’re going to plagiarise, at least do it properly.
“Women’s knickers were a terrible disappointment to me when I embarked on my co-habiting career. I never really recovered from the shock of discovering that women do the same as we do: they save their best pairs for the nights when they know they are going to sleep with somebody. When you live with a woman, these faded, shrunken tatty M&S scraps suddenly appear on radiators all over the house; your lascivious schoolboy dreams of adulthood as a time when you are surrounded by exotic lingerie for ever and ever amen …. those dreams crumble to dust.”
