I’ve lived in Germany for over 8 years now - a quarter of my life. In May 1997 I, for the only time in my life, had to take a day off work because I was hungover (I used a holiday) - I’d spent the entire night before watching the British election results come in (Swiss TV took the BBC feed direct). I’d sat with a Glaswegian colleague and consumed way too much alcohol. God knows what we drank after we ran out of champagne. And no, he was from the nice part of Glasgow, so it was probably normal Tennents as opposed to purple tin. Main point was the conservatives were gone. History. A new generation was in power. I’d never been aware of anyone before Thatcher and I’d hated her, the Major years afterwards I just saw as the slimey, arse-end of her reign. Okay, I hadn’t actually voted Labour, but I was overjoyed Tony Blair was our new Prime Minister. I watched CNN as he was driven to No. 10 that morning (in between visits to the bathroom to vomit - that day it was the alcohol that caused that to happen). I was particularly pleased to see Michael Howard lose his position as Home Secretary - no I haven’t forgotten the ban on law-abiding citizens owning hand guns at sports clubs - thanks for the fair compensation, by the way.
During the first term I watched as the economy didn’t get completely messed up, I did have a bit of a “Oh for fuck’s sake” moment after Princess Diana died, but things seemed okayish - after all the other lot had had 18 years and they were the only comparison I knew.
