Meme World #7

Posted on Saturday 21 May 2005

Gigglechick - a woman who normally is first on the block (and you get there pretty quickly in a convertible mini cooper) asked me to complete the meme that everyone, and I mean everyone, in Europe did about “music on your computer” about 6 weeks ago (we are so, cutting edge) here. But anyway here goes….

01. Total volume of music files on my computer?
4798 Songs - I could say “it’s all about the iPod”, but it’s Sony’s fault. Oh, and I’d like to point out to the RIAA that I purchased them all with the exception of those by Lance Couri, which were recorded on DAT (remember that) in Tübingen in 1995. If you’re in Southern Ontario, go and see Lance whenever you get the chance. He is wondrous. And if you are from the RIAA where were you then when that busker nicked the melody, eh?

02. The last CD I bought was?
The Jungle Book Soundtrack

03. Song playing right now:
Grant Lee Buffalo”The Shining Hour”

04. Five songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me(in no particular order):
Bruce Springsteen: The River (just ’cause she has it first doesn’t mean I can’t too). Oh okay, “Atlantic City”
Primal Scream: “Movin’ On Up”
Billy Bragg: “Moving The Goalposts”
Heather Nova: “Doubled Up”
The Wannadies: “You And Me Song” - I changed this one - I listen to it when I want to feel blue….. It initially said something by the Sisters Of Mercy….

5 songs just aren’t enough, are they? 50 would give a slightly more rounded picture - and I haven’t even got to classical….. Can I at least add “Pelleas und Melisande” by Schoenberg?

05. Which 5 people are you passing this baton to, and why?
• It’ll be a rock ‘n roll rebel thing, but I’m not passing it on………. Apart from anything I’d struggle to find 5 people who haven’t already done it Edit: Okay, Stairs and Anyhoo should do it…
German Phrase For Today:Lied ” - Song
Song playing as this was published: Blof “Ze is er niet”

Oh okay, I give in, I’d never heard it before - I only ever watch that Springsteen video where he gets a very young Courtney Cox on the stage to dance with him… Who is this Bruce Springsteen anyway? And as for the chicken man, why did they do that to his house too?

I thought this meme was dead and gone long ago. Then again, maybe everything that dies someday comes back.

Hmm, I’ve neither noticed nor done this meme before.

I like my planet just fine, thank you.

The jungle book? REALLY? You realise, of course, that today, this makes you Mowgli.

    i) 7211 (29.9 Gb), which is just over half of what it was before I realised that I never listened to any of it. It took weeks to rip all the CDs.

ii) Summer, by Summer (for my mother). Personal purchase: The Merchant of Venice Soundtrack, because I have my sister’s interests at heart, no matter how vague the connection.

iii) Hallelujah, Ari Hest (thanks, Ryan)

iv) Going by my iTunes play count:

Lonesome Tears, Beck - apparently I like sorrowful ballads more than I realise
It Can’t Come Quickly Enough, Scissor Sisters - but not played in weeks now
Fuck the Pain Away, Peaches - I don’t know, she doesn’t even have a good voice
The Undiscovered Country, John Williams - because epic film music is passionate and evocative
Inner Universe, Yoko Kanno - electronic Japanese composer with English choirboy and Russian vocalist makes for an interesting multicultural pastiche

5 tracks isn’t enough, is it?

    v) No one; I’ve never followed a meme on my blog, and by keeping it here, few people will ever witness my lapse. Besides, I couldn’t rightly ignore a baton passed in the name of friendship.

    Swine.

Hey look, everyone - Stairs lapsed!

AF: Does that SONY thing change colour every second in real life, too, just like on the website that you link to? Now that’s impressive!

Ok, now that stairs has done it first, and since I don’t particularly feel like posting this to MY blog:
    1) 0 on my current computer, as it has no sound card (it belongs to my dotcom start up employer.) I sold my old computer which had 300 ish downloaded from Naptser in its heyday, which happened to coincide with my first cable internet connection. I had the theme from THUNDERCATS for fucks’ sake
    2) Magnetic Fields - 69 Love songs
    3) Nick Drake - Pink Moon. I got it on cd friday and have had it on repeat since.
    4) Radiohead - Exit Music for a film, Decemberists - Lesley Ann Levine, Portishead - Glorybox, Joni Mitchell - Case of you, David Bowie - Life on Mars.
    5) Just wanted to share with you fine people.

Note to self: finish reading posts before posting comment that makes one look like egocentric megalomaniac. Even if I really am one, I should try not to let it show so easily.
