In the spectrum of emotions, from abject despair to total ecstasy, I’m not quite sure how wide that portion in the middle – the “doing okay” wavelengths – where we spend most of our lives is. I suspect it’s quite wide, for despite the, shall we say, “setbacks” of the past few months, I’ve felt things were going okay - not great - but okay.
I’m not exactly sure what the reasons are: the return of sunny weather, a large bowl of ripe, luscious cherries, double choc chip mint ice cream, or merely the fact that I haven’t had some mishap – or bruising occur for over a week, but this morning I woke up smiling for the first time since, well yesterday morning actually. But yesterday was the first time it’s happened in ages…
German Word For Today: “Wellenlänge” – wavelength
Song playing as this was published: Belle & Sebastian “The State I Am In”
I’m very happy to see that, and hope that your smile was at least half as cute as that of the little guy accompanying your post.
Sun, cherries and ice cream, how lovely life is! Evviva
I think you’ll find that Lazy Line Painter Jane by B&S goes much better with that kind of mood. That’s what I listen to when I feel like that.
Well that’s very encouraging. There’s something to be said for “doing okay”. I bet things will start looking up from here and people will start wondering why you’re walking around with that silly grin on your face.
Stairs: My smile is far more crooked, more of an evil grin actually.
Lisa: Well, the sun has fallen behind the horizon, and the cherries and ice cream are mere thoughts in my mind now. But yes, life “has potential”.
Christina: thanks - although people have been wondering about me since birth - specialists mostly.
EasyJetsetter: With lyrics like “tossing a coin to decide whether to tell your parents about a dose of thrush you got while licking railings.” are you sure?
Well, by the end of the song she doesn’t have thrush. That’s something to be happy about no? Getting over a disease? Very uplifting song.
AF,
It’s interesting that you mention “doing OK” in this context. I went to see “Garden State” this Saturday. One of the key scenes in the film features a thought on “just being OK” as opposed to “being happy”.
The flick, the directorial debut of Zach Braff, is a little bit rough around the edges but very entertaining. If you have a chance to see it, I can highly recommend it. Great cast (including a great peter Sarsgaard and a good performance by Natalie Portman, probably the best since the excellent flim “Leon”) and an interesting script, that only every once in a while features a contrived scene. Since “Garden State” is dialogue-driven I would stay away from a German-dubbed version if possible.

Hope its not the lull before the storm…….excuse my negative side, its just the way my head works
Glad to know that the smile on your face is back. The sun is shining in Germany (thank God!) and there are lots of things to be happy about. Think of those (little) things when your smile starts to slowly desert you again.
double choc chip mint ice cream?
YUMMMMM.
hope you’re still smiling…’doing okay’ deserves far more credit than its given…
The very reason I left Seattle was for the lowlands of sun and beach. I have seasonal affective disorder like you would not believe. I grew up in FL so I recognize when the sun isn’t around much. If the seasons effect you so much, maybe you should try a beach local instead on dreary Deutschland. Try a blog from Portugal instead!!!!!!!!
O try a blog from Italy!
(Well, I have to be honest: strange June, less sunny than usual…)
Have you died? Did the driver of the car come back for more blood? How about a new post, playa?
BlogFly: No, nice to see a new commenter by the way - I’ve been *cough* working: Really hard too. And playa? Playa?
Okay, I admit, I have been awfully bad at replying to people. There is surely an extra circle of hell, just for people like me (and for bloggers who don’t respond or post often enough). So let’s start at the top, shall we…?
