Wahl Week

Posted on Friday 9 September 2005

German elections always take place on a Sunday. British ones on a Thursday, that’s just the way things are: Americans set off fireworks on July 4th, the French on July 14th, us Brits on November 5th. I’m not saying that we Brits are more sensible in waiting until the nights go dark at 4:30 p.m. ; it’s more a case of if two, three or four hundred years ago, you had a revoultion / found another reason to suppress catholicism, then in 2005 you’re stuck with the dates that history gave you.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, the German elections are always on a Sunday. Somewhat unexpectedly, the next German election is a week on Sunday. Until then I’m going to try and write as much as possible about modern Germany and democracy (don’t snigger) as possible. Of course, there’ll be other stuff too, but now I’ve finished working on the computer for at least a week, I can actually use it to blog again.

Looking VERY mch forward to it.
If you need help with explaing specifics (5%-hurdle, first and second vote, “Überhandmandate” etc.), I’d be willing to chip in a bit of explanation work.
