Enough people have written about exactly why the Battle of Trafalgar was so important - Securing Britain’s trade routes first and foremost, giving her a century of naval superiority, annulling any idea of invading Britain, it ushered in a century of Pax Britannica and even enabling the slave trade (according to some) to be brought to a deservedly premature end. Helping the “differently-abled” the world over. As well as being for the benefit of Europe in general.
On the other hand, as was pointed out to me today: “So what’s the big deal? The English/Brits/Germans/Welsh fishwives / random nation of choice kicked Frenchie’s arse in a military engagement - it’s hardly unique.”
It’s important cos we gave johnny foriegner Mr Frenchy a jolly good beating with the boats. Hurahh!
Quite Mr. Haddock. Kicking Frenchie’s arse is always a reason for celebration.
They had a bunch of Nelson’s great-nephews on the news last night: one marine, one engineer and one navy, all with frightfully plummy accents. Good to know inherited privelege is still going strong in Britain. I’m looking forward to getting a piece of it.
EJ: were you watching the same 3 great^6-nephews? I wouldn’t have said they were remotely plummy. Maybe I just don’t have a good ear for fruit.
Except I thought one was RAF, so maybe there are two batches of 3 great^6-nephews.
