Comment Spam

Posted on Saturday 29 October 2005

Every time someone posts a comment I get an e-mail notification. This is “nice” – I can reply instantly if I’m online. I get the occasional bit of comment spam, one or two per day, but this is easily defeated in that any comment which contains a link (and spam always links back to their v|agra/p0rn/ca$ino/get laid 2nite site), gets automatically put in a list to be moderated. It never shows up on the site, google never indexes it; you’re wasting your time boys and girls.
Yesterday I received ca. 300 spam comments. This morning I woke up and had to download over 2,000 e-mails almost all messages about “comments awaiting moderation”.
If you posted a comment containing a link in the text, it could be that I deleted it – sorry – and expect comment verification system related messing about with the site over the next couple of days….

Update: There’s a spam detector sitting there now - don’t know if it works - I ran all the previous comments through and they were all fine, except those from Anyhoo, which got tagged as “highly suspicious”, but I knew that to begin with. Anyway, if you have any problems commenting send me a quick email at inactualfact (replacethisbitwiththeatsign) gmail.com

Did you take a screenshot of your inbox saying that you had over 2000 e-mails waiting to be read? I would have done so for sure - how exciting! :-)

Just wait until the spammers forge the e-mail sender using your domain and you wake up to hundreds if not thousands of bounces…

2000? Welcome to the curse of the Internet.

You’ve got quite an entertaining blog here. I’ve taken the liberty to blogroll it. Jeez, that sounds almost pornographic!

I’d suggest that if you’re using WordPress (and I’m fairly certain you are), that you invoke lovely Spam Karma 2. I was in the same position as you a few weeks ago, and it worked wonders.

    Highly suspicious?

Very innaccurate assessments generally really anger… oh, er, bugger… me.

So what is it about me which means I am linguistically the same as spam?
    - Right ungrammatic: check.
    - Frequent mispellings/tendency to use made up words: check.
    - Abrupt shifts in content (but that’s just sequential thoughts): check. Do you like green eggs and ham (well, if you’re Spam I am)?

    I await moderation.

    Well hurry up then.

Just think of it as a compliment, your blog is so popular all the spammers want a piece.
