Here’s two more:
“Scientists would rather wear each other’s underwear than use each other’s nomenclature.”
Keith Yamamoto, signal transduction researcher par excellence at UCSF (quoted by D. Ganem during a lecture in Boston)
“I get most of my ideas from bumper stickers, which is a pretty bad thing since fifty percent of the bumper stickers in San Francisco are about oral sex.”
Don Ganem, virologist extraordinaire, HHMI and UCSF, during a lecture at Harvard Medical School several years ago
I once saw a bumper sticker that said “heisenberg may have slept here” I found that mildly amusing.
My favorite bumper sticker ever says, “Everybody’s got Avogadro’s number” I’m not a scientist, yet I find that incredible hilarious. Avogadro’s a slut!
Ok, I give up. So far I’ve got that “the pessimist is a man, the something kiss something bacteriologist something something”.
And bacteriologist is probably wrong.
As for bumper stickers, the most interesting one I’ve seen said “Please recycle”. I’m still trying to work out what other uses a dirty bumper sticker has.
Random thought for the day: are cars recyclable? If not, why not?
I read somewhere that all of ford’s cars are already 70% recyclable and that 95% recyclable is “forseeable”
JCS: Keith Yamamoto - top man. I don’t just mean “signal transduction researcher par excellence” - genuinely nice bloke.
In-Law: Not sure how you’ll take this one, but there’s a US Military Insurance firm about 100 yards from my house and there’s always American cars parked outside. Best bumper sticker seen last year: “Vote Bush 2004! A dangerous man for a dangerous world!”
Anyhoo A pessimist is someone who allows himself to have the principle of a kiss descibed by a bacteriologist.
Anyhoo & EJ:The EU end-of-life vehicles directive - stipulates that manufacturers should be liable for the disposal of all new cars from July 2002 and for old cars from January 2007. It includes a target of recycling 85% of every car by 2006 and 95% by 2015. It aims to ensure that environmentally damaging substances such as lead, cadmium and mercury are not dumped but recycled and made safe.
