31 Minus 11 Songs, So, Er, 20 Songs. I Think.

Available on CD?Memes are generally not something I try to get involved with, but occasionally, when the idea of looking at the computer screen any longer and trying to concomitantly think of something original to say, being tagged by someone like Armin doesn’t sound so bad. So, here goes, a meme translated from German to English (which was probably translated the other way around first anyway) as a break from, er, translating.

1. A track from your early childhood
Anything from the “Jungle Book” – “Bear Necessities” maybe? That’ll be something to do with Gemütlichkeit in German.

2. A track that you associate with your first love
The Beatles – “When I’m 64.” See? Even at middle school I was thinking of long-term relationships…

3. A track that reminds you of a holiday trip
The Wannadies – “You and Me Song”

4. A track that you like but wouldn’t want to be associated with in public
Something by Tiffany/Debbie Gibson or no, I know, “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds.

5. A track that accompanied you when you were lovesick
Alanis Morissette – “You Oughta Know.” Because she looked just like her in the video, as much as the lyrics themselves. And she’s Canadian.

6. A track that you have probably listened to most often
Depeche Mode – “Never Let Me Down”. Ask my mother.

7. A track that is your favourite instrumental
Hans Zimmer – “You’re So Cool” (True Romance Soundtrack), if I’m avoiding classical.

8. A track that represents one of your favourite bands
Heather Nova – “Welcome”

9. A track which represents yourself best
As if I could be represented by mere music?

10. A track that reminds you of a special occasion
The La’s – “There She Goes”

11. A track that you can relax to
Ravel – “Le tombeau de Couperin”

12. A track that stands for a really good time in your life
Bon Jovi (yes, I know) – “It’s My Life”, mostly as a result of ZDF Sport using it as a theme tune for a football tournament. Even if England (and Germany) did get knocked out in the first round. On the other hand it could be “What Do I Do Now?” by Sleeper, or “Don’t Let Me Down Gently” by The Wonder Stuff or well, the same as all the other questions – at least a hundred others.

13. A track that is currently your favourite
Zero 7 – “In The Waiting Line”

14. A track that you’d dedicate to your best friend
Anything by Motorhead. He knows who he is.

15. A track that you think nobody but you likes
“Inactualfact Plays And Sings The Blues”. In fact, I’m not too keen on it either.

16. A track that you like especially for its lyrics
Billy Bragg – “Moving The Goalposts”

17. A track that you like that’s neither English nor German
Blof – “Een Mooie Dag”

18. A track that lets you release tension best
Belle & Sebastian – “Lazy Line Painter Jane” (depends upon the situation and what you mean by “releasing tension”, of course).

19. A track that you want to be played on your funeral
A track? The buggers that turn up had better sing some hymns.
Drunken singing and instrument playing is allowed afterwards (there’s lots of cash behind the bar for drinks – if I’ve been sick or died painfully I want my friends to feel equally ill for at least a day or two afterwards).

20. A track that you’d nominate for the ‘best of all time’ category
Now that’s just silly.

The GadgetGuy (who translated it into English) is still trying to find the English original. Assuming that’s where it came from…

True Romance Soundtrack - My favourite film of all time (written by Tarratino). The Hans Zimmer music is excellant.

Bon Jovi -Even with the explanation. ..their just so damn american. How can you stand it? (This is said firmly tongue in cheek. I have many fond memories of back seats and certain bon jovi classics.)

Oh, get it right. She’s not “Debbie” Gibson any more. A friend of mine addressed her as such in NYC some years ago, and she whirled around, snapping “It’s DEBORAH GIBSON NOW!”.

    She scares me a bit.

Oh come on, I’ll bet you really love 80’s music. Just can’t get enough of the stuff.
