My Favourite World Cup Story So Far…

Posted on Tuesday 20 June 2006

Always move the ball forwardsIs From Spiegel Online (in German). It tells of two England football fans who drove to Cologne and then went for a bit of a look around the town.

At the end of their wander they couldn’t actually find the street in which they’d parked their car. However, these two individuals were intelligent, well-prepared, and had planned for just such an eventuality by writing down the name of the street they’d parked in. All they had to do was ask a policeman where Einbahnstraße was. Classic.

I’ve done this! When I signed my son up for school I was asked at the city office which school it was. I couldn’t remember the name so the lady asked me the street and I told her “Einbahnstraße”! :D I will never forget the mixture of amusement and pity on her face. I still get a stab of embarrassment out of it after all this years and it never fails to make me laugh at how green I was back then.

Elle, bearing in mind the number of stories on this site that involve my lack of knowledge of German when I first came, I probably aren’t in any position to laugh. Even though I did. Sorry.
