Friday Five

Posted on Friday 23 June 2006

General laziness rules today, so just random crap incredibly interesting links….

1. The Friday Thing, who are wonderful people and send out a highly amusing e-mail every, er, Friday disappointed me somewhat today by referring to this as a “Mind Fuck”. No it isn’t. Adding the individual digits of any two digit number together and then subtracting that from the original number will always give a multiple of nine.

A two-digit number can be represented as multiples of 10.

For example: 21 = (10×2) + 1 and 45 = (10×4) + 5.

So a number with the left-hand digit of a and the right-hand
digit of b can be written as 10a + b.

If you sum the digits you get a + b.

If you subtract that sum from the original number you get

(10a + b) - (a + b)
10a - a + b - b
i.e. 9a

Oh, just look at the quiz again, but I have to wonder if they are still teaching maths at primary school nowadays?

2. They do however more than make up for it in the rest of their newsletter and with a link to a particularly excellent “Hitler Cat.” One advantage of not living in Germany anymore is that I don’t have to worry that someone will be overly zealous, think that link glorifies nazism and try to have me prosecuted.

3. If you are foolish enough to be an expat in the land of the Bratwurst, J is talking about organising a second Whiney ExPat Blogger Meet-Up. Go. Whinge. Whine. Complain. Admit a sneaking admiration for your hosts (but very quietly).

4. Problems folding t-shirts? No more, thanks to Die Zeit and their amazing diy t-shirt folding machine. Yes, it’s in German, but there are piccies, you can work out how to do it. Yes, you can! I have faith in most of you. Well actually, if you need help to fold a t-shirt, er. Oh, give it your best shot.

5. And from the same people - “Downloading illegal mp3s from the internet is dull, real geeks copy vinyl.” Even if it does cost €60 a go…

My…. you are getting a bit lazy there, and bored too I’m guessing. Yes, changing the colors (spelled correctly - thank you) on your web page can be amusing but not really fulfilling in the grander meaning of life. Actually, I’m kinda bored too and can’t think of anything really witty thing to say. I am glad to not have read about you in the news (under the “going postal because of moving back in with his parents” section of the newsprint).

Do your Random Photos do anything (are they meant to link to large version, your gallery or canon.com?) other than pulse menacingly when mouse-overed?

820: Look. What do you want, original content? I’m using all my imagination and creative writing skills on my resumé and trying to explain that papers in Int.J.Dev.Biol. are just as valuable as anything in Cell.
And it’s not just changing colo(u)rs, as Anyhoo points out, the Random Photos have pulsing borders… Bored indeed. Tsk. Well, okay, yes. Very much so, although I did like the copy an LP tutorial. Not bored enough to actually do it yet though…

Anyhoo: No you can’t have large versions, you just want to look at Exif data and talk about aperture size. And there’ll be no large photos until I can work out how to stop people nicking my bandwidth (the small pics are bad enough, a full-scale one would kill my bandwidth limit).
Anyway, as for the menacing pulsing, the hyperlinks underline does that too (so he is planning to link the photos)…

Missing It? A little…. And Germany too.
