Damn right!
When I went to Germany, Waitrose was “that really nice supermarket in Wokingham.” Now, there’s one in Buxton for Heaven’s sake! Before too long they’ll have Waitrose in Glasgow and a Harvey Nichols in Yorkshire or somewhere equally ‘gritty’ and improbable.
Supermarkets are old hat…..little organic farm shops are where the really refined people shop!
Haddock: Just because you gave some of your surplus tomatoes to a neighbour who insisted on giving you a couple of Euros despite your protestations doesn’t make you a farm shop. It’s not a business. You can’t get a VAT number and claim the tax back on your seed potatoes. Or when you go to the pub for “business meetings” (my personal favourite).
But Waitrose is exactly that: the little organic farm shop of HRH The Prince of Wales. Well, that’s what the one in Cirencester appears to be.
Anyway, they only buy from farmers who leave extra-wide field margins so that all the little mice and beetles and things have somewhere to live. Which is A Jolly Good Thing as it saves the little buggers from mistakenly thinking they would be welcome to move in with me. You just don’t get that level of Customer Care at Aldi.
I once appened on Arvey Nicks in Leeds. It’s down arcade, like. Nowt special - worn’t reet grand or owt.
David: Ah were down in London once and went ter that shop fer posh buggers. Reet queer it were. Un they sold tea in caffy on top floor that were green!
They did actually sell Yorkshire Tea (for Yorkshire Water, for Yorkshire People - not sure if that was a national campaign) in the shop though….
Queen Of Swords: I have to admit my family gets more money for the set-aside field margins than for renting out the other 90% (guaranteed organic by the soil association) for agricultural use. Doesn’t stop the mice and beetles getting into the kitchen, though.
