As I’m sure you’ll all be aware, today is St. Cyril’s Day – well, his feast day at least, as well as that of his brother, Methodius – who translated a Slavic liturgy into his brother’s weird alphabet in a very fast and precise manner. Their disciples still follow their path today. In more enlightened times they’d have been remembered by having relevant words named after them, rather than have people give roses and chocolate to each other, but then, I never did understand religion.

Just a nice little nerdy factoid. That oh-so-Russian letter, я, pronounced ‘ya’, also happens to mean ‘I’ and also also happens to be the last letter of the alphabet. So when you’re being naughtily selfish, a Russian will remind you that, “я is the last letter in the Russian alphabet.” God, don’t you just hate that sort of expression?
But, anyway, Happy St. Cyril’s Day!
BiB: Both St. Cyril & Methodius would be proud of you for pointing out that nerdy factoid. Not that they would refer to it as nerdy, of course…
Happy http://www.vday.org/main.html wise man!
