Why Oh Why Didn’t I Do Media Studies?

Posted on Thursday 15 May 2008

Whilst wondering how to find a job which pays enough to earn my passage away from these shores, I keep coming across job adverts which make those “earn ?500 a week or more driving a bus” stickers on the sides of big red vehicles sound very attractive:

For example:

“A highly motivated applicant is required for the Uro-oncology group. This post will involve novel research into tumour markers that may be used to predict disease behaviour in clinical prostate cancer.

Techniques that will be used include laser capture micro-dissection, microscopy, RNA extraction and amplification and real time PCR. A good understanding of molecular biology and laboratory techniques is essential. Prior experience in bench molecular biology and/or use of micro-dissection and microscopy is highly desirable.”

“Laser capture micro-dissection?” That all sounds very high-tech. No wonder the starting salary is ?16,684 pa.

Disgusting. It must be because of where it is. Supply and demand, right? Just like ELT jobs, basically.

I’m a bit confused: are you coming or going? Are you looking for something in the UK or abroad?

Mr. D: And it’s only cancer research, after all - and prostate cancer at that, which hardly anyone cares about. Even less than about ELT (well, maybe). Location doesn’t play that big a role - it’s more a case of whether you’re being funded by the Wellcome Trust or not.
As for do I know if I’m coming or going? No. No idea. But would leave tomorrow - which does tend to suggest that I’m looking abroad. I think a visit to S. Germany might be in the pipeline over the next few months (i.e. when I scrape together enough cash to sort out some things over there, things which would make applying over there a whole lot easier….).

King Lear: Here’s a task for you: next week - go out next Wednesday and buy a copy of The Guardian. Yes, I know it’s a distasteful thought, but their sports coverage is very good. Then look at the society:jobs section - it’s full of thousands of turkey army jobs in the 25 - 40K bracket for doing, well, not looking for prostate cancer cures, anyway…..

Personally, I think if you’re getting 40 grand for being a “stakeholder-manager” you should at least have to at least assist in the killing of vampires…

Surely the only career path for Media Studies is to teach other people Media Studies, there isn’t any actual use for it, it’s designed to keep middle class adolescents off the streets and the dole for 3 years.

Leaving so soon, can’t say I blame you, get out man, the longer you stay the worse it gets. I came back from Munich to see the family over Christmas in 1992 and I then found I couldn’t afford to get out again and got stuck here.

If you need a Mitfahrer keep me posted.

Red Baron: But I thought that was what Sandhurst was for? Ah, former times, eh? One for an heir, one for a spare and we’ll send the one that can’t read a map to lead men into battle…..

I was in the fair city of Cambridge the other day and it was very pleasant. Bicycles stacked outside the railway station, an air of “what you know, not who you are”, young female students baring lots of flesh on the first warm day of the year, a small, but cosmopolitan city - of course, I didn’t get the job, but the cheque for expenses arrived today, which is almost as good.

P.S. Eurostar 29 quid to Paris then €25 to the German border…. Not that I’m tempted or have even looked into it at all…..

Buy the Guardian? NEVER! I have been known to read it when left on a train though. But I shouldn’t worry too much. Very VERY soon all the jobs the Guardian advertises will no longer be on offer. I understand Boris has already cut ANY recruitment which must already be hurting their advertising revenue.
And the extra £2.7b Gordo is having to borrow means in essence a cut of about 100,000 of the worthless trolls. Which is why Mervyn dare not drop the interest rates any more, because noone would take the ( just been downgraded) UK Government gilts.
My other prediction is a drop of 25% in house prices over the next 3 years.

Really €25 to the Saarland is it? Didn’t know that. I might have to go and relive my student days on the Ostsee.

Sandhurts is for the 3rd sons of the Upper Middle classes, you don’t get there unless you’re the 3rd Marquis of Ffahquar or something. ie the one where the incestuous gene is absolutely bound to have led to some defects or other.

Were you applying for a job at Swamp Poly itself then? Bugger to park there so it is and the scantily-clad females are generally related to the aformentioned families.

That job posting sounds like it was pulled right out of my laboratory. Let’s see, that is about $32,000/year right? That works out to exactly what we pay starting research associates or career techs. Nope, there isn’t much money to be made curing cancer. BTW: laser capture microdissection sucks, it is boring as hell. Sounds cool though.

wow! it is late here and my eyes are bleary. which is most likely the reason why i read this as:

“humour markers that may be used to predict disease behaviour in clinical prostate cancer.”

    i thought it odd.

(how are you??? haven’t popped on here in forever.)

hmmm, the only person I know having done media studies worked as a temp admin in our office before falling for my former housemate/landlord (a lying moron). she is now a senior researcher for the jeremy kyle show (guess that happens if you stay for more than 6 weeks there). i presume driving a bus still offers a better pay, less hours and more intelligent people in your workplace than the afore mentioned job.
