Vergangenheitsbewältigung

Posted on Saturday 12 July 2008

Now. I’m not going to go so far as to say that I *like* the place, but after returning to Munich for the first time in five years I’m prepared to grudgingly admit that its (adopts voice of sullen teenager) “okay”*.

*On warm summer evenings. Whilst sitting in a beergarden. Drinking a beer. That someone else has paid for.

Munich is not exactly a vibrating metropolis. The weisswuerste sold at Dallmayr, however, are to die for. Fluffy and delicious. I brought two pairs back to Berlin a few months ago. Also, some of the museums are excellent (Pinakothek) and well worth a visit. Plus, the Sueddeutsche is still the best daily in the country IMHO. Just promise us to never ever become a supporter of FC Bayern, please.
I hope your trip was enjoyable,

JCS, I’ll agree with you about the weisswuerste from Dalmayr and the SZ and you have no need to worry that I’ll ever be an FC Bayern fan. I did spend the two shittiest, nastiest years of my life there, wanting nothing more than to get away and this was the first time I returned. As I can say that “you can see the Alps from the lab” I’m not going to say that the trip was “enjoyable” - more worklike, really - but it wasn’t as bad as I imagined, I might even go back.

In the meantime, greetings from the Black Forest.

that would even work in manchester - ooops - we might struggle with a) warm b) summer (defined by temperature not calendar) in combination with dry weather (for the beer garden - not that may around of the latter either for obvious reasons).

Hope you’re enjoying the Black Forest better than Munich… I grew up there. Never realised how beautiful it was until I moved away, though. (Right now I live in Frankfurt - what a difference!!) Munich is “ok” like you say but not my favorite city - that would have to be Edinburgh.

Be grateful you live in a developed country. I know I miss it.
